Prince Edward Island - Week 2

Friday, July 14 2017 - Every now and then, you have a perfect day. This was one of those days. We had a leisurely wake up/breakfast time and then went into Summerside for a lobster roll lunch. We revisited the secluded spot on Rte. 6 between Cavendish and North Rustico. We set up our chairs and had a peaceful, picturesque day of watching ocean waves, birds, and boats. Afterwards, we went to a shopping strip and got ice cream from Cow's Creamery. It was our last full day on Prince Edward Island and it couldn't have been better. We are very blessed.

Thursday, July 13, 2017 - We stayed closer to Summerside today.

Alan and Bill washed the car and then went to Green Historical Park (at least that's what they think it's called).

Diane and I walked to town to check out the sidewalk sales. We then walked to Samuel's Coffee House. It is very popular - lots of people inside, but we didn't order anything. We then walked the route of the historical tour that Alan and I took. I shared the details that I remembered - like the pig in the arch of the government building. We worked our way to the Lefurgey Cultural Center.

We all went to the Lobster Carnival in the evening. Free hot dogs for everyone! We also got free bottles of water, chips and dip, cheese, and music.

Then a stroll to the park where 2 boys were practicing their bagpipes on the shore.

An ice cream to finish the evening!

Diane sent this to me. Sweet.

Wednesday, July 12, 2017 - We spent a long day in the car. We drove the southern end of the Points East Coastal Drive. We went from Charlottetown to the Point Prim Lighthouse to Wood Islands Ferry to Georgetown and back to Summerside again.

Point Prim Lighthouse - we didn't pay to walk to the top

We noticed this on the road. It is set up in someone's backyard! They accept donations for a children's hospital. The buildings in the bottle village are named after their grandchildren.

At Wood Islands Lighthouse, we could see a mother osprey on a nest with 2 young. It is also beside the ferry that runs to Nova Scotia. (We didn't pay to walk to the top of this one either.)

We stopped at this winery. I sampled the Maple Mead. It was very good, but I opted not to buy it. We saw sand sculptures and a horse.

We went in to Georgetown which looked a little run down, but had a beautiful community garden.

Our car is a little dirty from our excursions! Yesterday we noticed that we all had dirt on the back of our legs. It is where our legs touch the car as we get in and out!

After we got home, Alan and Bill went to the free Wednesday live music at the park. Diane and I went to the Red Shores Harness Races. I picked horse #2 to win and it did! Unfortunately I didn't place a bet so no money was collected, but it was fun to watch.

Tuesday, July 11, 2017 - We had another wonderful day. The temperatures remain in the 70s so we ride everywhere with the windows down . . . so I have a hat on in almost every picture. It's all good.

Our first stop was Anne of Green Gables. It is part of the park system and it is FREE as part of the 150 celebration. The upper right shows Bill and Alan on the left side of the photo watching a re-enactment of a section from the book. The lower left shows red chairs facing the Green Gables house. Red chairs have been set up in the parks facing picturesque scenes. Lower right - Diane with Anne. Alan and Deana doing a fabulous photobomb!

And then there are the silly pictures . . .

We ventured to Robinson Island in search of more red chairs. A fox was waiting by the parking lot. The trail was lined with trees for shade and fields of flowers. A photo worthy scene was at every turn. The cool breezed from the coast helped make the hike easy.

We found 2 sets of red chairs and glorious views.

Then we went to Dalvay-by-the-Sea - the summer house of Alexander MacDonald built between 1896 and 1899. It was amazing. The upper left shows Canadian geese on the lawn by the lake. We rested in the chairs and watched them.
After our full day, we made our way home. We ate at KFC. Alan had the poutine - a Canadian favorite of fries, brown gravy, and cheese curds. He liked it. Then Diane and I rested at home while the boys went to watch the horse races. They won $4.50 (though we don't know how much they spent) and used their gambling fortunes on ice cream. And that concludes another day of a fabulous vacation.

Monday, July 10, 2017 - We had a very packed day! We toured most of the scenic central coastlines. Below are probably too many pictures, but it is what it is . . .
We started at the Marine and Rail Historical Park. It has a lighthouse that we couldn't go in. It is right beside the Confederation Bridge.

We then traveled through Victoria on our way to this lighthouse near Port La Joye Fort Amherst National Historic Site. This lighthouse needs restoration. It is very cool. It would make a nice home or bed and breakfast, but it needs work! When the mosquitoes started feasting on us we left.

We donned some insect repellent and walked through this historic site. Across the bay, you can see Charlottetown. There were 2 more lighthouses here. The one on the bottom right had a constant light.

We found a patch of lupins. These were everywhere - in purple and pink shades - when we arrived a week ago and now they are almost gone.

We rolled into Charlottetown and ate lunch. Alan and I split the famous PEI mussels. They were delicious. We then walked around the historic area. The churches are beautiful.

Another beautiful church

The statue is Sir John Macdonald - a prominent historical figure.

Top picture - It's hard to see, but Bill is in the "C" and Alan is in the "5".
Bottom picture - One of my favorites. This trailer pulled up as we were at a traffic light. Alan ran out in the street beside it.

The PEI Preserves/Gardens of Hope site. Very peaceful. And, of course, I am coming home with preserves.

We went to Anne of Green Gables. It's a park so it is free! We arrived as they were closing so we will have to return. We traveled over to the PEI National Park area and saw several foxes along the side of the road.

The red chairs in the upper right have been placed around PEI at scenic areas. I love this PEI National Park area. It is just beautiful. Temperatures in the 70s make it heavenly.

We saw the area with the "teapot" when we came on a cruise in 2015. We found it again. It is just as beautiful as remembered. To view our cruise memories, click here

Our last stop was this church. There are numerous churches on the island.

Sunday, July 9, 2017 - Time for a grocery run, but stores don't open until after 12. We ate breakfast out and then went on a drive. Note: I facetimed Austin today. I showed him our open bedroom window so we could get the cool breezes. He said he could open his window too and he would die. It's in the 90s in Georgia and our boy does not do heat!

We saw fields of yellow. After a little googling, we concluded that this may be canola. We then found our way to Belmont Provincial Park which is on a point. Water on 3 sides may for very pretty scenery.

Alan and Bill went to harness racing in the afternoon and then went to the park to sun/relax. It was low tide and Alan could walk out pretty far. He is the dot in the middle.

While Bill and Alan sunned at Green Shores park, Diane napped and I went for a walk. I saw our squirrel friend on the way and then a bunny rabbit at the end. Yes, I walked all the way to the end! For supper, we grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. The hot dogs were chicken/pork. They exploded on the grill. We tried them, but they ended up in the garbage.

After dinner, we went on an adventure drive looking for a good sunset spot. The mosquitoes drove us away from the first spot that we found by a cemetery and field.

Our final spot was at the West Point Lighthouse where Alan and I toured last week. The mosquitoes weren't as bad, but they got us again. Dang insects!

Saturday, July 8, 2017 - Today we drove to Halifax, Nova Scotia to pick up our friends - Bill and Diane - who are joining us for the next 2 weeks.

As we were leaving the island, we saw a fox!

We visited the Public Gardens in Halifax.

The gazebo was beautiful.

Flower beds celebrated Canada's 150th.

We stopped at a church on PEI to take a picture of the bridge - in the background between me and Alan.

It is a full moon! A beautiful night!
